Content First

Break out of the chicken and the egg design loop and start with meaningful content

An author wouldn’t start a novel with the number of pages predetermined and then write the words to fit. So why do so many applications begin with placeholders and lorem ipsum instead of real content?

This does little to inform about the relationship between an application’s layout and context. There runs the risk of focusing only on design elements which can be problematic. Elements might not flow, features might get tossed and time is wasted. This slippery slope of wasted time also leads to missed deadlines and unhappy clients.

A content first approach illuminates what is important. The content used does not need to be a final draft but it should provide at least some context and that can help better define elements.

This also means that a minimum viable product can also be quickly rolled out and be available for relevant feedback. Decisions about the flow and narrative of the application can be made with purpose without incurring too much technical debt or wasting valuable time because there is an understanding of what the application is trying to communicate.
